This is the checklist I rebuilt from my own scribbled notes after my surgery, the things that mattered, the things I forgot, and the things nobody warned me about. Check items off as you go; your progress is saved on your device only.

Before Your Appointment

Verify insurance coverage for strabismus surgery Call your insurance to confirm coverage and understand your costs.
Gather previous eye records and prescriptions Any previous eye exams, surgery records, or prescription history.
Prepare questions for your surgeon Write down everything you want to ask about the procedure.
Take photos of your eyes in different positions Helps document your condition before surgery.
Arrange for someone to drive you to appointments Your eyes may be dilated during pre-op exams.

1-2 Weeks Before Surgery

Review medications with your doctor Some medications may need to be stopped before surgery.
Arrange time off work (1-2 weeks typical) Recovery time varies, but plan for at least a week off.
Confirm ride home from surgery You cannot drive yourself after the procedure.
Arrange childcare or pet care if needed You'll need help during the first few days of recovery.
Complete any required pre-operative tests Blood work, EKG, or other tests your surgeon requires.

Recovery Supplies

Get prescribed eye drops filled Antibiotic and steroid drops are typically prescribed.
Purchase wraparound sunglasses Protect your eyes from light and wind during recovery.
Prepare ice packs for swelling Gel packs work well - have several ready to rotate.
Buy artificial tears/lubricating drops Your eyes may feel dry during recovery.
Download audiobooks or podcasts Reading may be difficult the first few days.
Prepare or order easy meals You won't want to cook during recovery.

Day Before Surgery

Note fasting instructions (no food/drink after midnight) Follow your surgeon's specific instructions.
Shower and wash your face thoroughly No makeup, lotions, or creams on surgery day.
Lay out comfortable, button-up clothing Avoid anything that goes over your head.
Prepare ID and insurance cards You'll need these at check-in.
Get a good night's sleep Try to relax - anxiety is normal but rest helps.

Surgery Day

Arrive with clean face - no makeup or lotions This helps prevent infection.
Leave contact lenses at home You won't be able to wear them for weeks after.
Remove all jewelry and piercings Leave valuables at home.
Arrive at scheduled time (usually early) Allow time for check-in and pre-op prep.
Bring phone charger and reading glasses if needed For the waiting periods.
